Rocco Renda, that dashing young man about town, has lived in the Chicagoland area his entire life except for four years earning his B.A. in Theatre at Eastern Illinois University. Rocco has always been a Renaissance man of theatre; acting, directing, costuming, and writing. Working with Cuckoo's Theater Project is no different. Recently you may have seen him performing in PETER/WENDY (Mr. Darling/Smee), THE LOST BOY (Old Crow), or DANGEROUS (Rosemond), or his costuming skills in THE GLASS MENAGERIE. When he is not involved in theatre (which is quite rare), Rocco enjoys reading, going to movies, watching TV, writing, and being the best son/boyfriend/brother/friend/uncle/nephew/cousin he can be.
Get to know Rocco!
TCTP: Jesse gets in trouble a lot at school. Were you a troublemaker as a kid?
RR: I was the weird, outgoing kid in school. I would end up getting into a little bit of trouble. But once I found theatre, I had a place to direct all my energy and creativity.
TCTP: This is a show where characters (and the actors themselves) break the fourth wall. How do you feel about breaking the fourth wall, when you're working on a show? How about as an audience member?
RR: The second play I ever acted in required me to ask an audience member to help me with my evil laugh. Thinking it would be a great, I chose my uncle. Bad decision. He wouldn't help me at all and I spent 5 minutes arguing with him in front of the audience. Since then I have been very hesitant about breaking the fourth wall.
TCTP: What distracts you?
RR: I am distracted by my own brain. I will start talking about one thing and my mind will split onto a dozen different tangents. It will sometimes drive my friends and family crazy that I don't ever finish a thought.
TCTP: In the play Mama has a big decision to make about Jesse’s future. what kind of decision maker are you? You do research? Make a pro-con list? Trust your gut? Something entirely different?
RR: I'm not sure what kind of decision maker I am. Pretty much all the major choices in my life were decided for me. If it's a small decision like where to go for dinner, I will text random friends to pick between two words. Like bicycle in rodeo clown. I will assign each word to a restaurant I want to go to. So that way people make minor decisions for me. LOL
TCTP: Jesse loves rap. His parents don't love that he loves rap. What kind of music did you listen to as a kid?
RR: I grew up listening to the Golden Oldies of the 50s and 60s. Pretty much the only time I listen to music was in the car and my dad always got to decide the station
